watercolors by Scott Kuykendall

I sometimes work on a synthetic material called Yupo. It was developed for commercial printing. It’s a non-porous surface which allows for some very unpredictable results. The capillary action of adjoining colors sitting on the surface while still wet can be fascinating to watch. It’s both very spontaneous and forgiving at the same time. I like it because it forces me to be loose – even looser than traditional watercolor – and lends itself to certain subjects, like singular objects or icons.
