watercolors by Scott Kuykendall
Painting the human figure from life is the most challenging of all subjects. The easiest thing to do is to paint a dull, lifeless human-thing. How to imbue the work with the same spirit and energy the model has? Most of my figure paintings don’t look exactly like the man or woman who is posing. My intent is not to paint portraits, it’s to capture the essence of the person sitting there. All these paintings were done in periods ranging from 45 minutes to three hours.
