watercolors by Scott Kuykendall
On the face of it, still life compositions can seem trite and commonplace. After all, their subject matter can have little or no importance as objects. What appeals to me about still life painting is the process of transforming a thrift store urn into a crown jewel on the paper – changing the mundane into the sublime. Eventually, the ordinary becomes extraordinary, and an alternate, enhanced reality takes the place of the old one.
